Hrayr Berberoglu (affectionately known by his students as "Mr. B") lived his childhood close to the "cradle of wine," the Caucasus region, and experienced fine food and wine from a very early age.

After graduating from the Salzburg Tourism Academy in Austria, he worked in one of the fine hotels of Bremen, Germany. During this period, he travelled extensively in Germany visiting wine regions, vineyards and wineries, conducting primary research and tasting wines.

In 1968 he arrived in Montreal to work as an assistant banquet manager and controller. An opportunity to work as director of management services at Sutton Place in Toronto was interesting enough for him to move to the commerce centre of Canada. Here he designed a new food and beverage cost-control system, and trained many servers in fine wine service.

While at Sutton Place, he trained the food and beverage controller of the sister hotel, Bristol Place. The trainee was a graduate of the then Ryerson Polytechnic Institute's Tourism and Hospitality Management program. This experience familiarized him with the post-secondary hospitality education in the province. In 1974 Mr. B began lecturing at Ryerson's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, specializing in food and beverage subjects. During his tenure of 25 years, he travelled extensively, conducting research and studying wine growing regions in South America, Europe and the Far East. He wrote forty textbooks and consulted to many hotels and restaurants.

Current wine related activities

Now retired from academia, Mr. Berberoglu concentrates on tasting wine, beer and spirits; writing for four on-line magazines and web sites including distilling.com, foodreference.com, jewelsoffood.com, winesofcanada.com, vinum.ca, madamesommelier.com, virtualpalate.com, and Just off the Vine (Ontario Wine Society); consulting to the food and wine industries; and special projects for Canadian Executive Services Overseas (CESO) in a number of countries (Lithuania, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka). He tastes 4000 - 5000 alcoholic beverages annually.
